Lamu is the end of the east, the beginning of the west, and at the line between north and south...the heart spot (and under the horn) of this amazing continent. As you explore the narrow streets and share the intriguing lives of the multicultural inhabitants of this unique island, you will be inspired to think of life in a totally new way. Near the town along a five mile long pristine beach bordering the tradewind-swept waters of the Indian Ocean, you may explore your self-expression to your heart's desire.
Wildebeeste Workshops, located in the town centre in old Swahili coral houses, offers visitors peace and relaxation in this 16th Century slave port or specialized art workshops tailor-made for artists or anyone of any age or experience.
At Wildebeeste Workshops you can learn and practice the arts of print-making and hand tapestry weaving....or write, design and print your own book, either by highest of desk-top tech or by traditional hand bookbinding using handmade paper.
Whatever you do here, and hanging out is the prefered lifestyle, you will enjoy the ambiance of an Arab-African community generally undisturbed by modern intrusions.
We offer penthouse accommdation or courtyard students rooms all at reasonable rates.
Our staff cooks traditional Swahili food (lots of fruit, seafood and coconut!) and the restaurants are varied and nearby.
You may travel here by daily flight from Nairobi or Mombasa-(the night train to Mombasa is also a favorite)-or come by bus or sea from Mombasa or Malindi. We will arrange for you, at your request, a variety of experiences from artwork to snorkeling, fishing by dhow, archeological visits to jungle-covered ruins on nearby islands or lessons in Kiswahili.
